An enigmatic woman who seems to often stare straight into your soul. She comes off strong with her bold statements and doesn't really know much about personal space at times. She loves to pry and poke fun with a note of flirtatious intent. ❁ Backstory ❁

Born under the sea in the small secluded village of Sui-No-Sato, Jo lived a very strict childhood, forced to study the art of arcane to follow her mother’s footsteps and immediately be married off. She hated the path that was already drawn for her and resented her parents. She was a diligent student but would often wander outside to find something to do other than being locked in her room, forced to stuff her face in books.She found joy in finding objects that sank deep into the ocean floor and found many treasures that she stashed away. Her favorite was a harp that she quickly restored and tried to learn playing on her own during the night. This is how her passion for music came to be and she would impress the other children whenever she came up with a new song. Her parents were mildly concerned about this new hobby but thought that something other than studying would do their daughter some good from time to time. Little did they know that she had collected many blades and sharp objects that she played with. Eventually, they learned of her obsession when she began to manifest injuries on the palm of her hands that she desperately tried to hide. She has permanent scars on both her palms. Despite being uncaring about her appearance, her parents managed to drill in her head that the scars on her hands are “ugly” and a mark of shame.Close to her coming of age ceremony, an outsider came to the village, a Hyur adventurer. The villagers were all quite displeased with his visit but it did not stop him from staying a few days which peaked Gakunin’s interest as she often went to talk to him and wondered about the outside world. He eventually taught her archery during his short stay in secret before he had to leave, leaving Jo to daydream about adventuring outside of her village.Jo’s mother immediately tried to find many suitors for the young girl. Not wanting to be stuck with a stranger that she doesn't love, she sneaked out of the village, seeking refuge in Tamamizu where she encountered the wandering adventurer once more. Seeing how distressed the girl was, he took it upon himself to take care of her and bring her to Eorzea.By the time they arrived, the battle at Carteneau have passed and the adventurer came home to a devastated Limsa Lominsa. Slightly embarrassed to have taken a young girl from her home to a place where nothing remains, he tried his best to teach Gakunin about the Eorzean way but mainly how he used to live before the Calamity as a bard. They helped with the restoration and Jo was mainly an entertainer during those dark times. Her songs and dance gave joy to people and she started to feel as if this was where she belonged. Becoming more and more popular, a lot of her fans tried to seek her out. Most were genuine and offered gifts but a small few wanted more out of the girl. Her first encounter with this kind of individual definitely shook her. The man was forceful and aggressive but thankfully, her mentor gave her a ‘special’ gift when he noticed his apprentice was visited by a few men. Without hesitation, she plunged the dagger into the man’s chest. Knowing full well that a simple stab wouldn’t immobilize someone of his size, she kept stabbing, each strike being sharp and precise. The sound of flesh being teared apart gave her some sort of rush, a pleasant feeling. Before she knew it, her white dressed was tainted red as she was smirking at the man she tore apart on the ground. She was still in a daze when her teacher came to check on her when he heard strange noises coming from her chamber. Seemingly unfazed by the spectacle before him, he helped the girl dispose of the corpse and clean up. Gakunin never spoke about the events to him in detail but that night, the Hyur simply pat her head as a sign of relief that she wasn’t the one he found on the ground.A few year later, Jo thanked her mentor for everything he’s done for her and left to satisfy her newfound craving. She didn’t quite understand what was gnawing at her but after that fateful night, she lost pleasure in simply entertaining the bands of merry fools that were in taverns. She wanted more… So much more. She set out to Gridania to hone her archery skills. Showing exceptional skills, she was often asked to join the Twin Adders as an officer but she always refused, not wanting to be bound by responsibilities. She soon set out for Ul’dah where she was approached by a somewhat handsome looking Hyur (to her standards anyway) who was intrigued by her peculiar horns. Gakunin was slightly suspicious of him considering this wasn’t the first time she’s been approached because of her appearance but he seemed like the honest type but more importantly, very flirtatious… Interested about him, she followed him to Horizon where he asked her if she knew about the blessing of light. Jo never really spoke about her strange dreams where she saw a majestic crystal reaching out to her. It was at that moment that the young woman started her journey alongside the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
